Anton Bruckner in Linz

Anton Bruckner was an Austrian composer, organist and music teacher and spent a significant part of his life in Linz. During his time in Linz, Bruckner was active in various areas of the city’s musical and social life.

  • Old Cat hedral (also known as Ignatius Church): Bruckner was organist at the Old Cathedral in Linz from 1856 to 1868. This church was a central point in Bruckner’s life, where he not only worked as an organist, but also developed his skills as a composer.
  • Landestheater Linz: Although Bruckner is mainly known as a composer of symphonies and sacred music, he was also involved in musical life outside the church. It is likely that he attended or participated in events at the Landestheater Linz, which is an important venue for cultural life in the city.
  • Brucknerhaus Linz: The Brucknerhaus is a concert and event venue on the banks of the Danube in Linz. Although the Brucknerhaus was not built until long after Bruckner’s death, today it is a center for musical events and a symbol of Bruckner’s lasting influence on the city and the music world.
  • Bruckner University Linz: The Anton Bruckner Private University for Music, Drama and Dance in Linz was also only founded after his death. It reflects Bruckner’s long-term influence on musical education in the city.

Did Anton Bruckner have a favorite restaurant?

In Anton Bruckner’s time, coffee houses and inns were central meeting places for intellectuals, artists and citizens, where they discussed, worked and spent their free time. During his time in Linz, Anton Bruckner will certainly have visited various restaurants and coffee houses, but unfortunately he left no concrete records of this.

There are historic pubs and inns in Linz that have a long tradition and already existed during Anton Bruckner’s lifetime. Some of these establishments may have been popular meeting places for the local population and the cultural elite at the time. Here are a few examples of traditional pubs in Linz that have a long history:

  • The Hotel Schwarzer Bär in Linz is one of the oldest and best-known hotels in the city. It is centrally located in Linz, the capital of the federal state of Upper Austria, and looks back on a long history. The Hotel Schwarzer Bär may already have its roots in the 15th or 16th century, making it one of the most historically significant inns in Linz. It is located right next to the old town of Linz and could therefore be a place where Bruckner might have frequented.
  • Stiegl-Klosterhof: Although the Stiegl brewery is based in Salzburg and its origins date back to 1492, its presence and products can also be found in various pubs and restaurants in Linz.
  • The K.u.K. Hofbäckerei zu Linz has a long tradition in Linz and could also be an interesting historical point. It is still a bakery and coffee house today, so it is quite possible that Anton Bruckner bought one or two pastries there back then.
